What happens if I withdraw a CD early?

Banks usually charge an early-withdrawal penalty, often a number of months of interest, and can reduce your principal in some cases. Check the terms before opening.

CDs at FDIC-insured banks (or NCUA-insured credit unions) are insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category.
